Great community - great culture

Appreciation

I’m writing to express just how much I, and we at the club, appreciate the community and culture we are so fortunate to have here. With all the hard work of the crew through these few short years we have been able to achieve so much, and I want to tip my hat to them as well!

What makes this community so great is the culture of those involved who care about Island Sailing, the members, and thus care about the boats. Sailors who take care with the gear, with the boats, and respect the work and effort that has been put into making this all possible for you all - our members. We appreciate how our members regard the boats as more than “just a club boat…” Our members care about “the club” and thus they care about the boats.

We so appreciate our sailors who come to us if they have broken something and let us know right away and ask us to let them know what the cost will be - they don’t blame the wind but instead own their errors and seek to become better sailors. They appreciate the club, the boats, and the crew and we appreciate them.

We have had members walk up with winch handles in their hand and my first thought is, ‘oh no - they don’t have a reservation… did the system get messed up?!’ only to have them tell me, “yea, we lost a winch handle last night and so I went and bought a replacement so you guys wouldn’t have to…” We are so fortunate to have members who come to us, we don’t have to go to them, to tell us “I broke this and just let me know what the cost will be…”

That’s the nature and the spirit of this great community and culture and a major part of what makes Island Sailing so special and wonderful for everyone involved.

We have members who come to us and ask for guidance in stowing the boats as they are learning. To seek to do something well simply for the pleasure of doing something well is so rewarding - and thus it is our members who bring so much value to our culture - and we want to say thank you.

We have members who come in and ask us how they could do this or that better, or if we have any tips for them on how to work with the engines better, etc. Always seeking to improve and recognizing their limitations - recognizing there is always room for improvement. This is the kind of attitude that contributes to the great culture we are building together as a community here at Island Sailing.
