A S A 1 0 5 COASTAL NAVIGATION
One of the many phrases we love at Island Sailing is “to be a bold but prudent navigator…” Learning proper traditional navigation is much more than “just another certification” - it is part of the very essence of good seamanship. Using a plotter with all of the amazing modern features is great. Indeed, with modern technology you can even set your system to even turn the boat at a given way point - you can “see” exactly where you are on the screen, and the “bells and whistles” are endless. (B&G even incorporates a stereo control into their plotters, so yea - the modern tech is pretty sweet.) But staring at a screen and poking at it IS NOT NAVIGATING.
The difference when you learn the basics of traditional navigation is not only knowing how to continue navigating safely if the systems go down - the real difference is that you will know what those amazing modern tools are doing for you. This way those “tools” are now in service to you as “aids to navigation” and you will not be in service to those tools…
